How to Choose the Right Advocate in India
From bar council verification to consultation fees — the checklist we wish every client knew before hiring a lawyer.
Choosing the right advocate can decide the outcome of your matter. But with hundreds of options, how do you separate the right fit from the wrong one?
First, verify credentials. Every practising advocate in India must be enrolled with a State Bar Council. Ask for their enrolment number and verify it on the Bar Council's website before you pay anything.
Second, match practice area to your problem. A brilliant corporate lawyer is not the right person for a family dispute. Look for advocates whose practice areas align with your matter — property, family, criminal, consumer, GST and so on.
Third, compare consultation fees and availability. Many advocates now offer video consultations, which makes it practical to interview two or three before committing.
Fourth, read reviews. Genuine client feedback on responsiveness, clarity and outcomes is the closest thing to a reference you can get without asking directly.
